Writing
Writing is the LAST feature area to unlock in WELE. It shows up late on purpose: writing is a demanding "production" activity, and it only really helps once you have a listening foundation and a bit of staying power with your learning. Showing it too early just overwhelms newcomers before they've had a chance to build that foundation.
Unlock conditions
Writing unlocks when you meet BOTH conditions: your level is at least A2, AND you've been a member for at least 7 days. This "7 days" gate is the only TIME gate in the entire app — no other feature makes you wait a number of days. Everything else in WELE unlocks by ABILITY (θ/band); writing alone adds a tenure requirement.
Why does writing unlock at A2 (lower than speaking's B1 threshold) yet end up the last area you see? Because two different things are at play: micro-writing (writing one short sentence) is feasible earlier than fluent speaking, so its level threshold is lower. But it's the 7-day gate that decides the order things appear in — even if you reach A2 very quickly, writing still has to wait out your first week, so in practice it always shows up last.
Why 7 days, not ability
The time gate exists because writing calls for a signal no score can measure: persistence. Seven days of coming back regularly shows you've formed a habit, and only once there's a habit can another production activity be added without overloading you and making you quit. In other words, WELE uses time as proof of commitment — something a level test can't capture.
What writing looks like
Once unlocked, writing items appear on the Today page as small micro-writing prompts such as "Use 'principles' in a sentence" — usually tied to a word you often miss. Why ask you to USE the word instead of rereading its meaning? Because writing a sentence with it is active retrieval: you have to rebuild the word in context yourself, and one use like that sticks far better than rereading it passively many times.
Because writing shares the "one production slot per day" with speaking, you'll only see one of the two on any given day (see Today). This keeps your daily production workload at a manageable level.
Did you know
- The 7-day gate is the only time-based restriction in the whole app — WELE unlocks almost everything by ability, and only writing also depends on tenure, because it needs extra proof of a lasting habit.
- Writing unlocks at A2 (lower than speaking's B1 threshold) because micro-writing is feasible earlier — but the 7-day gate is what makes it always the last area you see.
- Writing prompts are usually tied to a word you often miss, and deliberately ask you to USE it — because writing a sentence is active retrieval, which sticks far better than rereading many times.
