Today

The Today page answers a single question: "What should I do right now?" It picks ONE main action and a short list of what comes next, all tuned to your level and goals. The "one thing at a time" design isn't minimalism for looks — it's a tool against overload: when the screen suggests just one clear task, you don't burn energy deciding, so it's easier to start and easier to keep the habit.

Today page with your next action

Your next action

At the top is "Your next action" — usually an exercise chosen around your level, labeled "Right at your level (~80% accuracy)". But there's one important exception: if your review queue has piled up too much (20 or more words due), clearing your reviews is promoted to the main action.

Why 20 words? Because spaced repetition only works when you review close to the due date. When your "review debt" gets too high, adding new exercises just lets the words you owe drift further past their due dates and start to be forgotten. Paying down the debt first protects the memory investment you've already made.

Up next

Below that are a few "Then" items at most. The queue is built from these types: listen, review, drill (practice your common mistakes), explore (browse the library), series (continue a series you're following), and one "production" activity: speak or write.

Listening is always the BACKBONE. Speaking and writing items are never made the main action, always come after listening and review, and are DROPPED entirely if there's no listening exercise that day. The reason: WELE is a listening platform; speaking and writing are extras, never a replacement for the core skill.

Only one "production" activity per day

Speaking and writing are the two "production" activities — they SHARE a single slot each day. That means on any given day you'll see speaking OR writing, never both. This is a deliberate constraint to prevent overload: producing language takes more effort than taking it in, so cramming both into one day can easily wear you out and make you quit.

When both are eligible on the same day, WELE picks the skill you've "left the longest" (least recent → most worth doing); if you've never done one of them, that one takes priority; if it's a tie, speaking wins (because it unlocks earlier than writing). This rotation keeps you from neglecting either skill.

Did you know

  • The Today page deliberately names just one main task — a "one thing at a time" design so you don't get overwhelmed and find it easier to keep the habit.
  • 20 due words is the threshold where priorities flip: below it, listening is the main task; at 20 or more, clearing reviews comes first to protect the memory you've built up.
  • The "for your goal X" label only appears when an exercise is genuinely related to your goal; otherwise, WELE honestly says "Right at your level (~80% accuracy)".
  • Speaking and writing share exactly one slot per day, and that slot always comes after listening and review — you can't accidentally turn a day into all speaking, and a day with no listening exercise has no production item at all.
